Genius Hour Project
Welcome back to my blog.
In life we face many things that will hold us back and keeping us from doing what we need to get done. My shoulder injury made it extremely hard for me to shoot my shotgun in order for this project to work. And still, I am not completely comfortable with shooting due to my shoulder. The amount of recoils a shotgun gives off is a lot more than most firearms. Though I was not able to completely fulfill my goal I had in mind, I still learned a tremendous amount about patience and understanding. Very often, times were aggravating not being able to hit the clays. And I had a few "off days" in my journey through this project. But I kept trying to push myself to get better and better.

Hey guys welcome back to my genius hour project blog!
I am still not able to shoot my shotgun due to my shoulder injury. I go to the doctors to be cleared for activity and check back up May 8th. I hope to be able to shoot soon enough to continue with my project in time for our final presentations. Also, missing baseball is taking a toll on me. I absolutely love the sport and I am not able to play it at the moment and the thickest part of our season passed right by without me. Thanks for tuning back in, Jacob Welcome back to the blog guys!!!
Things happen in life that we have to adapt to such as injuries. Earlier last week, I injured my shoulder and it has kept me from plating baseball which has had a huge impact on me because playing and practicing baseball is what I love to do. I haven't been able to shoot ever since last Wednesday. So today marks one week since the injury. I am hopeful to be able to get back to sports and shooting very soon. I have gone to see a doctor but have only been told it is strained muscles within my shoulder. I feel that there may be to it than that because I have experienced strained muscles before and this is not what that would feel like. Ive been afraid to shoot recently due to the fact that there is a possibility that I could re-injure my shoulder. So... Looking forward to keeping up with my shooting. Hopefully I will be caught up on my goals when I return even with this time off. Thanks for keeping up with me again guys. Jacob Welcome back my loyal readers!!
This week on my journey, I am looking for local skeet shooting events around my area. Most of them are charity events that will go towards different organizations for different shooting events. One that I am aware of is an event hosted by a group called YoungLife that I am very associated with and take part in frequently. Hopefully my mentor and myself can find a good event to attend. At these events, the competition will be a bit more than what I would be used to. I am interested to see how I could do against other people. Thanks for tuning back into the blog!! Ill be back next week with yet another update. Jacob Welcome back to my blog guys.
To get you guys back up to speed on my project, last week i exceeded my goal of shooting 7 out of 10 skeet. Now i will be increasing the amount of discs that will be thrown and shot at at one time. I will now be tracking shoots in 15 disc increments. My new goal would be to shoot 12 out of 15. I feel that this is a good goal to have set for me because it will challenge me to shoot with more accuracy and for a longer duration as well. Videos are planned to be coming out soon and I am very excited for that to take place. Thank you guys for tuning in for yet another blog post! Jacob Welcome back to the blog!!!
Today I am back with another update on my shooting it is a super exciting one!!! The other day, I went down to do my regular shooting and little did I know that I would be finally reaching my goal of shooting 7 out of 10 solid skeet! I can not even begin to describe the feeling of finally reaching this goal and actually seeing myself grow and dedicating myself to this sport. My mentor AKA my father was also very proud of me, which felt even better than feeling good about myself!! I am thoroughly enjoying doing this project and will recommend to my friends to try and see how good they can get. Thanks for tuning back into my blog! See you guys next week!!! WELCOME BACK TO ANOTHER BLOG POST!!!
So, since you guys saw me last, I was telling you all about the history about the sport of shooting skeet. Today, I will just be updating you on my progression in my endeavor of getting better and more accurate with my shot. Yesterday, my mentor and I went and shot skeet on our own. What we used was a manual thrower to fly the skeet across the field to shoot at. We plan on meeting up with my partner and using an automatic disc thrower which takes all possibilities of mistakes or bad throws away. Also making the process more efficient and faster. The skeet with be thrown more precise and we will be able to really work on what angles we want to shoot from and not need to adjust according to the disc every shot. I am looking forward to that very much. Anyways, I made a bit more progress on my shooting today! I shot 6 skeet out of 10 thrown. I noticed there were no discs that were only chipped and I got a good hit on all of them. This felt very good to know that I am able to effectively hit the skeet without just chipping it and getting a clean shot. Seeing the discs shatter in the air and knowing that you actually did it is one of the most rewarding feelings in the world. I am loving doing this project and will keep you guys updated... Jacob Welcome back to the blog guys!
For todays blog, I thought it would be a good idea to give you guys some background information on the sport along with a little bit of a history lesson. Charles Davis and William Harnden invented the sport in 1920. Shooting skeet was introduced to the public in 1926 after the creators had perfected the setup and rules of the game. 100 dollars were awarded to the person who could come up with the best name for the activity. The name chosen was "skeet". This derived from the Norwegian word for shoot (skyte). The sport became extremely popular and eventually made its way into the Olympic Games and is played every year by the most competitive and competitive shooters around the world. The first forms of competitive shootings were called "turkey shoots" or "rifle frolics". Most of the prizes were beef or other food products. These meet ups were often formed into local clubs where people within a community that share a love for shooting could meet frequently. These are some of the ways skeet shooting came about! Thank you guys for tuning in on another blog post! Jacob Welcome back to the blog guys!!!
This past week, I used a website called "YouTube" to research and watch videos on the technique for shooting clay discs with more accuracy. I was very excited to get down in the field and shoot this weekend while using new ideas I had gathered through this research. However, what I found was very interesting. I did in fact shoot with more accuracy hitting 4 out of 10 and getting a piece of one more. But being able to shoot with more accuracy did not rely solely on watching videos and learning about the sport. I believe that I showed growth because of experience and being more comfortable with what I was doing. I had built up a sort of confidence in myself and my shot. I believe that this sport requires a good amount of practice to be successful in it. I was not necessarily happy with only shooting 4 out of 10 clay pidgeons because I had higher expectations. If my expectations were lower perhaps I wouldn't have been as successful as I had even been. Anyways! Thanks for tuning in for this weeks blog post... Pictures coming soon and the gear being used and explained. Jacob Welcome back to the blog!!
This week was very exciting! It was my first outing of the project. I believe I have found a good starting spot for this project and definitely have room to improve throughout this genius hour project. In this weeks round I shot 2 out the 10 discs that were "pulled". I really did not expect to miss as many shots as I did. This was surprising to me because I have done this before but it had been many years. I decided to go into this weeks shoot with no instruction of my form for shooting the discs to see how much I had actually remembered from previous times shooting at the targets. I am interested in seeing how I will do in this upcoming week because I will have a mentor (my dad) there helping me with the technique. No matter how hard he tried to help me, I was set on trying this week on my own as kind of a "trial run". I am also interested in seeing how my mentor plans on teaching me these skills that are needed to shoot with more accuracy. I have begun watching videos on the internet about tips and tricks for getting better at the sport and plan to use these to help in next weeks shoot. Thanks for tuning into this weeks blog! I will be back next week with an update on my growth and see if I have gotten any better! Jacob |
